Benefits and drawbacks of having wisdom teeth removed
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are a set of teeth that typically grow in during a person's late teenage years or early twenties. They are located at the back of the mouth, behind the molars. While some people do not experience any problems with their wisdom teeth, others may develop issues such as pain, discomfort, or decay. In these cases, wisdom tooth extraction may be recommended.
Dr. Richard W. Lee will consider several factors when deciding whether or not to extract your wisdom teeth. These may include pain or swelling as the teeth erupt, partial emergence of the teeth, the risk of gum disease or tooth decay, the formation of a cyst around the tooth, alignment issues with other teeth, and difficulty chewing. An x-ray may be taken to determine the position and growth of the wisdom teeth.
Wisdom teeth extraction is a common oral surgery procedure. Dr. Richard W. Lee will discuss sedation options with you and provide post-surgical instructions to ensure a smooth recovery. Most people recover within a few days, though it can take a couple of weeks for the gums to fully heal.
