Reduce Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry

For many people, the thought of getting into the dentist’s chair fills them with anxiety and stress. To help even the most nervous patients get the care they need, we offer conscious sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry gives our patients the chance to get the dental work they need while remaining relaxed and comfortable.

Contact our office to learn more about sedation dentistry and see if it’s the right choice for you.

Could I Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?

Anyone who suffers from a fear of the dentist, and is in good physical health, may benefit from sedation dentistry. Aside from general fear and anxiety, sedation may be a good choice if you have:

  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • A fear of needles or injectable anesthetics
  • A history of traumatic dental experiences
  • Overly sensitive mouth/teeth
  • A low pain threshold

Sedation dentistry can also be useful for patients who require a large amount of dental work. Parents with anxious children who are considering sedation dentistry should consult their pediatrician. Patients who are pregnant should consult their family doctor and their dentist before taking sedatives.

Types of Sedation Offered at Alexandra Park Dental

Before we start any procedure, we will thoroughly discuss all sedation options to ensure you fully understand the process and any associated risks. Then, we will work with you to determine which form of sedation best suits your needs.

Unlike general anesthesia, conscious sedation means you will remain awake but will be groggy, sleepy, and relaxed. We will use numbing anesthesia to localize the area, coupled with one of the following sedatives:

Oral sedation involves taking an oral sedative before your procedure. Oral sedation leaves you awake for the procedure but significantly relaxes your mind and body. Many anxious patients can benefit from this type of dentistry.

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, involves inhaling the gas throughout your procedure as needed. This type of dental sedation allows your anesthetist to adjust your sedation levels as necessary throughout the procedure and can be a good option for most patients.

Before & After Sedation Dentistry Care

There are several things you should do before and after you’ve received sedation dentistry that can improve your experience and keep you safe while impaired.

You should:

  • Follow any instructions that we give you regarding fasting and prescription medications before the procedure.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your procedure
  • Have a friend or family member drive you to, and pick you up from, your appointment.

You should:

  • Have a friend or family member should stay with you until the sedative wears off.
  • Not drive or operate any hazardous equipment for 24 hours after your appointment.
  • Drink plenty of water.

Dr. Lee and his staff are truly amazing! I took my 3 year old there for his first ever dentist appointment and it went off without a hitch. My son loved the fact that he got to watch TV while getting his teeth cleaned. He experienced no pain so there was nothing but smiles. Afterwards he told me that he can’t wait to go back and get more free toothbrushes!read more

I was very happy with my experience today at Alexandra Park Dental. Safety was their first concern, with masks and face guards being used, and information gathered to ensure that their patients were feeling well. Because of this, I was able to sit back and relax while they x-rayed and cleaned my more
