You may require a root canal if you:
However, these signs and symptoms can vary from patient to patient. The best way to determine if you need a root canal is by scheduling regular dental exams. If you have a cavity, our dentists will attend to it before it becomes severe enough to require a root canal.
A root canal involves removing infected or inflamed tissue from the centre and roots of your tooth. This tissue (also called pulp) contains sensitive nerves and blood vessels.
Your dentist will start by applying local anesthetic to the area around the tooth. After the area is sufficiently frozen, we will drill to the centre of the tooth. Then, the infected pulp is carefully extracted, and any areas of the affected tooth are removed. After the area is cleaned, your tooth canal is sealed, and a filling is inserted.
In some cases, additional restorative care may be required. Depending on the severity of the damage, your dentist may suggest a permanent dental crown be fitted over the tooth.
