Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges are a fixed, or non-removable, prosthesis made from Emax or Zirconia ceramic. This appliance is made to resemble your natural teeth, and are used to replace two or more teeth in a row. The teeth on both sides of the empty space are used to attach the bridge to restore functionality and aesthetics.

Types of Bridges

At Alexandra Park Dental, we offer several different types of bridges, which vary in placement, application, and cost.

• Removable Bridges: Removable bridges are not cemented in place, so they are easily removed for cleaning. However, they are not as stable as other bridge options.
• Fixed Bridges: Fixed bridges are cemented to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. These types of bridges are more stable than removable bridges, but require extra care and attention for cleaning.
• Implant-supported Bridges: These bridges use and artificial metal tooth root (a dental implant) to attach the bridge to your jawbone.

Why you might need a dental bridge?

A dental bridge can serve several purposes including:

• Replacing missing teeth
• Preventing movement of other teeth
• Fixing the aesthetics of your smile
• Full mouth rehabilitation
• Dental Implant therapy

Dental Bridges are indicated whenever at least two teeth are missing. A bridge is composed of abutments and pontics. Abutments are the supports for the bridge and consist of crowns placed on the teeth surrounding the empty space. The pontics are special crowns that span across the empty space and connect to the abutments.

When teeth are prepared for a bridge, the abutments are prepared for crowns just as described in crowns. We will then take an impression of the prepared teeth, make a temporary bridge or crowns to place on the teeth to protect them and maintain their positions, and send the impression to a dental laboratory to fabricate the bridge. At your next visit with Alexandra Park Dental, we will try-in the bridge to ensure a good fit and then cement the bridge in place.

Do you really need to replace a missing tooth?

If you have missing teeth, the teeth around them and on the opposite arch can begin to drift out of place. Teeth that drift out of position:

• are prone to tooth decay
• experience uneven wear and bite force
• can affect the feel of your bite and your smile
