The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinged joint that connects the jaw to the skull and allows the jaw to move up and down and from side to side.
If this joint has been damaged or stressed in any way and causes discomfort and pain, TMJ disorder can develop.
Although the causes of TMJ disorder are somewhat unknown and hard to pinpoint, the following symptoms, often in combination, are thought to be the leading causes of TMJ disorder:
After discussing your symptoms and reviewing your medical and dental history, we will conduct a full examination of your jaw joint. We’ll listen for any unusual sounds when you open and close your mouth, check pain points, and inspect your range of motion.
If necessary, we may recommend taking x-rays to help us better diagnose your problem.
We offer a variety of treatments to reduce pain and manage the discomfort associated with TMJ disorder.
Custom oral appliances can reposition the jaw joints for proper alignment. Worn primarily during sleep, a custom mouth guard can help jaw joints and muscles to relax and has proven beneficial for many of our patients.
We may recommend massage and warm or cold compresses to relax joint muscles and provide relief. Anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants, exercise, and relaxation techniques are all strategies that can relieve pain and make your jaw more comfortable.
